Copywriter’s health and safety: take care of your eyesight and your back!

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

Copywriting is very popular. More and more people are choosing to earn money from writing. Such work is most often done remotely, at home. Although it is convenient, it often involves long hours spent at the computer.

Daily and long hours of computer work can have a detrimental effect on our health, especially the condition of our eyes and spine. The impact of the monitor’s radiation and staying in one position for long periods of time can cause many annoying ailments. People who work at a computer often complain of:

  • a feeling of dry or watery eyes,
  • eye pain,
  • headaches,
  • neck and shoulder pains,
  • back pain,
  • pains in the hands, wrists,
  • feelings of drowsiness and fatigue.

You can effectively minimize the risk of the above ailments. To do so, one should follow a few tips. We suggest how to take care of occupational hygiene.

Ergonomics of the workstation

The right workstation is the basis. The best choice will be a swivel chair with adjustable height and armrests. When working, thighs and calves must form a right angle, and feet should rest comfortably on the floor. With adjustable height, we will adjust the seat to be comfortable, but we must remember to be at least 30 cm from the keyboard. This way we will avoid hunching while working and neck pain.

Let’s also take care of the correct height of the table. Let’s choose a piece of furniture so that we can comfortably place our legs under the tabletop. The computer at which we work should be at least 40 cm from our eyes.

Correct posture

As mentioned above, when sitting at a desk, your thighs and calves should form a right angle. In addition, the seat should not put pressure on the buttocks. While working, let’s make sure to sit upright, leaning with our backs against the chair. If we take care to support our elbows and keep our hands in the air (do not rest them on the keyboard), we will avoid shoulder pain and minimize the risk of the so-called carpal tunnel syndrome, which manifests itself as numbness and pain and tingling in the hands from the wrist to the fingertips.

Tips for tired eyes

The basic rule for maintaining eye health while working at a computer is to ensure adequate light. Remember that the best lighting is natural daylight, so (if possible) don’t leave work until late in the evening. During the autumn and winter months, we can illuminate our workspace with standing lamps aimed at the ceiling.

While working, it’s a good idea to remember a few ways to make your eyesight fatigue slower. Every hour, let’s take a five-minute break from looking at the computer screen. During the break, let’s focus our eyes on something far away from us, and we can also look at green objects. To relax the facial muscles, it’s a good idea to blink your eyelids frequently, and if you’re struggling with an itchy or burning sensation in your eyes, use eye drops. We can also make cool compresses, which bring instant relief to tired eyes.

Take a break for exercise

It is advisable to get up at least once an hour while working and stretch for a few minutes or do some muscle relaxation exercises. It’s a good idea to do shoulder and hip circles. During breaks, we can also do breathing exercises or go for a short walk.
